Building Tectonics

Using my family home as the subject for this project, the instruction was to improve the current design as well as construction of the home and then later adapt to a new location within the marshlands of Portsmouth Harbour.

Including the previous phases of the house as well as the future adaptations is key in understanding the fabric of the building.

Analysing the construction techniques of the time that the house was built (1960s), it is determined that certain methods were used to construct the building and building materials that were common during that time in the United Kingdom.

In order to enable a more sustainable approach for heating and cooling the neighbouring houses, a ground source heat pump can be installed within the nearby vacant fields, using only a portion of the land to supply to a large radius of houses.

Calculating the U-Values of the current wall types and optimising them to lower the value as much as realistically possible is key in creating a more sustainable design.
